Cross-National Equivalent File (CNEF)

The SHP is part of the Cross-National Equivalent File (CNEF).The CNEF 1970-2009 contains equivalently defined variables for the US – Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP), the British Household Panel Study (BHPS)/(Understanding Society), the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA), the Canadian Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID), the Swiss Household Panel (SHP), the Korean Labour and Income Panel survey (KLIPS), and the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey-Higher School of Economics (RLMS-HSE). The data are designed to allow cross-national researchers to access a simplified version of these panels with guidelines for formulating equivalent variables across countries.

An article (Frick et al. 2007) describing the state-of-the-art of the CNEF project can be downloaded (here).

The CNEF-variables of the SHP can be obtained through 2 channels:

  1. Download CNEF variables of SHP (registered users only)
  2. Comparative CNEF-data of all member countries

The CNEF data (CD including all member countries) and documentation can be acquired through the Ohio State University. They will email you an invoice for $125 (US). Once they receive your payment, they will mail you the disc. Continuing users get free updates of the data. Contracts with the separate institutions responsible for the panels need to be signed to access the data on the CD (more details).
