Remembering Sir Tony Atkinson. Former member of the FORS Scientific Board

Tony_Atkinson

It is with great sadness that we report the passing away of Sir Tony Atkinson. Tony died in Oxford, UK, on 1 January 2017, at the age of 72. Tony was a scholar of highest renown in the world of economics with immense achievements in the field of inequality research. Since January 1, 2012 he was the President of LIS, the Cross-National Data Center in Luxembourg formerly known as the Luxembourg Income Study. FORS ist the Swiss representative at LIS.

Knowing his scholarly record and worldwide prestige it was by no means evident that he would agree to join the FORS Scientific Board right from the start in 2008 on, giving his support to a new and internationally unknown institution. Tony played a crucialt role in the first years of FORS. Most prominently, he co-authored – together with Prof. Max Kaase and Prof. Klaus Armingeon – the very first scientific evaluation report on FORS in 2012. This report was to become paramount for the further development of FORS. Tony decided to withdraw from the Board in 2013 because of the work load connected to his engagement at LIS:

Tony was an eminent scholar and an exceptionally likeable person. He was always prepared to listen and to give valuable advice. We are very grateful that we had the priviledge to collaborate with him. We send condolences to his family, and we share our sadness with colleagues and scholars all over the world.
