The Project

The Swiss Electoral Studies – Selects is a research project embedded in different Swiss universities and funded by the SNF. Through Selects, it has been possible to study voting behavior in Switzerland in depth in the latest four national elections. The project, started in 1995 with the ambition to connect Swiss electoral research to the state of the art at the international level, has been successful in many respects. The Selects project created a series of datasets allowing long term comparison. Meanwhile, each year innovative new questions and additional data collections were incorporated. The data have been widely used for scientific research. Within Selects, several PhD theses have been written and a large number of scientific publications have been produced.

Project Structure

International Research Network

At an international level, Selects is part of two major international comparative projects. The Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES) is an international network of national election studies. CSES develops questionnaire modules which can be integrated into post-election voter surveys. The fourth round of the CSES module was integrated into the Selects 2011 questionnaire, and Selects also participated in the three previous rounds. Selects is also part of the newly established network: Comparative Candidates Survey (CCS), which conducts surveys among all candidates for national elections in participating countries. Switzerland conducted this additional survey for the first time in 2007 and again in 2011. Finally, Selects is also a member of the COST Action “The True European Voter“. The Action aims at strengthening the network of national election studies in Europe and to build a common comparative dataset of national election studies.

The Selects commission guarantees the strong interconnection of Selects with the Swiss research community and other authorities related to elections. The commission is mandated by the Foundation Board of FORS. According to its mandate, the duty of the commission is to guarantee the quality of electoral research in Switzerland and to strengthen the network of electoral research in Swiss universities and other authorities concerned with elections.
